Celebrating Arbor Day

April 26, 2019 by Karen Pischke

Celebrate National Arbor Day, the Last Friday of April – Plant a tree or take a walk in the woods today and enjoy connecting with nature. Dogtown and Ravenswood in Gloucester and Coolidge Reservation in Manchester-by-the-sea are favorite places to enjoy a peaceful and relaxing walk in the woods. The Arnold Arboretum in Boston is another great place. For more strenuous hiking, head to the Green and White Mountains of Vermont and New Hampshire or Acadia National Park in Maine. #NationalArborDay

“I think that I shall never see, a poem lovely as a tree.” — Joyce Kilmer

The History of Arbor Day and the Morton Family.

The Morton Arboretum. Walks at the Morton Arboretum with my mother are some of my fondest memories. In Springtime, enjoying flowering apple, cherry, dogwood and redbud trees and scent of spring blossoms. In Autumn, the kaleidoscope of leaves changing colors. There, among the trees is a ‘go to’ for relaxation, meditation and healing. This grove of redbud surrounded by daffodil was a favorite spot of my mother’s at the Morton Arboretum.

The importance of trees–

  • Trees provide shelter, food, fuel, medicine, and tools.
  • Trees provide climate control.
  • Trees filter the air.

Kids Love Trees –

What are your childhood memories of trees? Ever since I can remember, I have always loved trees. Collecting and identifying leaves, climbing and swinging from branches, resting in their shade, retreating to tree houses, raking and jumping into leaf piles, the scent and sound of leaves crunching under foot, picking apples in autumn, all favorite childhood memories.

How will you celebrate National Arbor Day? I hope you enjoy time for a walking meditation in the woods, relaxing and ‘connecting’ with trees, and all the beauty of nature.

Happy Arbor Day,

Karen
